In musical form

That Really Happened in 2009

In chaotic music video form, here's a look at some of the crazy things to occur this year.

That's What Christmas Means to Me

Merry Christmas! A special video today, recorded by Alyonka & Diana Larionov, daughters of former NHL great Igor Larionov, and aspiring singers. Not to mention cute blondes. This video was shot as a Hockey Fights Cancer benefit.

Top 10 Habs Moments of the Decade

With 2009 coming to a close, I put together a list of my Top 10 Montreal Canadiens Moments of the Last 10 Years. Here it is, with accompany video:

10) Montreal Selects Carey Price 5th Overall
Whatever you think of Carey right now, this was a moment that everyone remembers. People wanted Gilbert Brule or Benoit Pouliot in this slot, and thus far, neither of those guys have amounted to much. Still, it was an exciting time, with our highest selection in quite some time, and we ended up with a player who still has the potential to be the face of our franchise moving into the next decade.

9) Jose Theodore's Incredible Season
People often clamour for the return of a superstar to Montreal. But we had one... for a season. For one year, Jose Theodore was the greatest single player in the National Hockey League, lifting us to the post-season pretty much on his own. He was rewarded for these achievements with both the Hart and Vezina Trophies. Just a lucky season? It's anyone's guess what went wrong after that.

8) Canadiens' Come-From-Behind Playoff Win
No, this is not the comeback win vs. Boston you're thinking of (see that lower down the list). But this was a game in 2001-2002 that had every Habs fan jumping, as Montreal erased a 3-1 deficit in the game to down the Bruins 5-3, and take a 2-1 series lead. Though they would lose the next game, the Habs would take games 5 and 6 to advance. The go-ahead goal was a real beauty:

7) Gilmour's Penalty Box Slam
The Canadiens had a good run going in 2001 as a sleeper team in the playoffs, but things would eventually fall apart against the to-be-Champions Carolina Hurricanes. One of the greatest moments of the intense series came after Doug Gilmour was assessed a penalty:

6) Kovalev on Tucker
This one was an instant classic. Late in the second half of a Montreal-Toronto back-to-back series, Alex Kovalev skates over the blueline and narrowly avoids an attempted elbow to the head by Darcy Tucker. Kovalev picks up the puck, skates around the whole Leafs' zone looking for Tucker, then lets the puck slide off his stick to run Tucker over.

5) Habs Complete Game 7 Comeback vs. Boston
You could forgive the 7th seed Montreal Canadiens for thinking this series was a done deal when they were down 3 games to 1 to the 2nd seed Boston Bruins in the first round of the Playoffs. But this was a team that just wouldn't die, and forced a game 7, paving the way for this:

4) Geoffrion Jersey Retirement Night
You could pick any of the jersey retirement nights that led up to the Centennial Celebration, but this was the one that got to me the most. The fact that Boom Boom passed away that morning made it hard for anyone watching to keep a dry eye, and the lowering of his father-in-law Howie Morenz's banner to join his in their mount to the sky (VERY symbolic) was a classy, tear-wrenching move on the team's part.

3) The 5-0 Comeback Game
Rightfully so included on the 10 Greatest Games of Habs' History DVD, this was a magical night that led fans to believe their team could accomplish anything that season. A red hot Martin Biron would eventually end those dreams in the 2nd round of the Playofs, but even so, 5-0 comebacks are not a dime a dozen, so this one will be remembered for quite some time.

2) The Centennial Celebration Game
The Montreal Canadiens know how to do ceremonies and celebrations the right way, and this incredible evening proved it. From the former Habs skating out onto the ice for the warm-up, to the surprise jersey retirements, it was a special night for all involved, and any who had the pleasure to take it in. The fact that we kicked Boston's ass that night made it all the better.

1) Saku Koivu's Return from Cancer
I consider myself exceptionally fortunate to have been there that night. I've loved Saku from the day he first stepped onto the ice in Montreal, and to see him return the very same season he was diagnosed with and battled through non-hodgkin's lymphoma was a scene taken right out of a Hollywood blockbuster. Tears and cheers were a plenty this evening during a lengthy ovation the moment he skated out. Not that the score of the game even really mattered at that point, Montreal's win that night over the Ottawa Senators also officially clinched their playoff spot.
